Jumbo is Being Acquired by Coalition, the Leading B2B Cyber Insurer

Dear Jumbo community,

Today, we are excited to announce that Jumbo is being acquired by Coalition Inc., a prominent servicer of cybersecurity insurance. As a result, we write to inform you that Jumbo has reached its final chapter, and while Jumbo will no longer exist as a standalone product, its philosophy and DNA will live on in the services that Coalition provides. It has been an incredible journey serving you, and we are eternally grateful for the support, trust, and enthusiasm you have shown us along the way. This post aims to address some important points about our farewell and provide guidance on how to navigate the transition.

What This Means for You

Firstly, we want you to know that any data stored on our servers will be purged, and that means 100% of it. As always, you are in control of the data that is stored locally on your device, including 2FA codes and archives. If you have valuable content stored in your Jumbo app, it is crucial to export it promptly. Failure to export 2FA codes and archives will result in potentially permanent loss if the Jumbo app is uninstalled at any time.

Secondly, It is important to mention that Jumbo will no longer be accessible through the App Store (iOS or Google Play) after June 18, 2024 (next year) and won’t receive any further updates after v5.9. To prevent being locked out or losing your social media archives, we’ve put together some steps to help ensure a smooth transition.

Here is what you need to do now that Jumbo is winding down:

  1. Update to 5.9: Our final version (5.9) is a simplified version that contains export tools to help you migrate any social media archives or 2FA codes that you might have in Jumbo. This version has also been stripped down of any tools that would have malfunctioned once Jumbo shuts down.
  2. Export 2FA Codes: Since Jumbo will no longer receive updates, it is crucial to export your Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) codes. If you don’t, then you will be permanently locked out of your accounts if your Jumbo app is ever deleted. To export your codes, update to 5.9 and copy your 2FA secret over to another 2FA app (we like Authy and 1Password as free alternatives).

Frequently Asked Questions

To address some common queries you might have, here are a few frequently asked questions:

  1. How do I export my 2FA codes?
    • Use Jumbo’s final version (5.9) to copy your 2FA secret, which you can then paste into a free 2FA service like Authy, 1Password, Keychain, etc. - See this video for a demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/oemWhJhOudE
  2. Will Jumbo be downloadable on the App Store?
    • Jumbo will remain on the App Store until June 18, 2024. After that, Jumbo will no longer be downloadable from the App Store, but will remain on your phone until uninstalled.
  3. What if I paid for Jumbo?
    • Jumbo went free earlier this year. See our blog post here: https://blog.withjumbo.com/jumbo-becomes-free-for-all-consumers.html
  4. What will happen to my ID Insurance?
    • ID Insurance coverage will cease on June 30, 2023.
  5. Will any features still work after Jumbo shuts down?
    • All features, except 2FA and Archive, have been removed as of v5.9
  6. Why am I being forced to update to 5.9?
    • Previous versions of Jumbo contain tools that simply won’t work once we shut down. If you continue to use previous versions of the app, it will be a very broken experience and could lead to issues with your accounts and logins. To avoid this, we are requiring all users to update to 5.9 which is a simplified version that is built to migrate your 2FA and archives outside of Jumbo.
  7. Will I have to worry about my social media accounts still being connected to Jumbo?
    • No, this information will be removed. We never stored any of your social media information on our server, so there is no risk of leak from our wind down.
  8. Will the Jumbo VPN still be active on my phone?
    • No. The VPN will no longer operate properly. The VPN profile will exist in your VPN Settings until you delete the Jumbo app or you delete the VPN profile manually by visiting Settings > VPN > Tap the i next to Jumbo’s VPN profile.

What We Accomplished

Throughout our journey, Jumbo achieved numerous milestones and made significant contributions to the privacy and security landscape, and the truth is that we had a lot of fun doing it! We like metrics, so here are some fun highlights to illustrate how our tools have helped people:

From Our Users

But you don’t have to take it from us. Here are some of the beautiful things that we have heard from our very own users.

From the Team

Throughout our journey, what we are most proud of are the friendships, cohesion and sheer amount of fun we were able to create as a team.

As a product group, we moved quickly, issuing brand new releases almost every single week, while staying dedicated towards creating something that users could trust and genuinely enjoy using. Through the designing of our interface, the UX for blurring a home address, our in-app messaging service, and more, we have had lovely memories working together to find the right design, layout and messaging to make privacy simple and most of all, intuitive.

Behind the scenes, our backend team was able to deliver consistent and reliable service, all while keeping user data encrypted and private. Doing so with “privacy first” as our guiding principle made things harder to build (just ask our Javascript team), but it felt good to stay true to our mission as a company.

Over the years, we were able to reach users from different parts of the world and show them multiple ways to reinforce their privacy and security. Our goal was to create a product that made it simple for users to protect themselves online, while delivering the absolute best customer experience of any app online (if we do say so ourselves). Through the remarkable, glowing, and even funny reviews that we’ve received, we know that we achieved that goal, at least for some.

As a team, we are proud of the culture that we were able to build. This has been a culture that led to a high degree of productivity and team cooperation (cooperation that led to us getting out of the escape room together!), but more importantly, led to incredible growth for so many team members as individuals. This is a group of people that genuinely cared for each other, often willing, and even eager, to help each other out. This is evidenced by the fact that there have been many people who started in one position or place in their career, and are now in a better one. From our retreats, to the fun that we’ve had in the office, to the number of users we were able to protect, we are proud to have created a culture where people could do phenomenal things.

It’s quite rare for any startup, let alone any company, to be able to maintain the same team for 3+ years, and of those who have left, most have gone on to start their own ventures. This speaks to not only how strong our culture is, but the commitment that people have shown to our mission.

So here is a “cheers” to the amazing product managers, designers, customer support pro’s, engineers, marketers, leadership and office cultivators who made Jumbo such a special place to work.
